Matching FedEx's headline increase, UPS has announced an average net increase of 5.9% for its Ground, Air, and International daily rates, effective December 21, 2026. But the detailed rate previews and ZIP code changes shippers need to assess their exposure are still to come.
What UPS has announced
Alongside the headline increase, UPS has confirmed several changes:
- Additional Handling: The minimum billable weight for Additional Handling packages will rise from 40 to 50 pounds.
- Area surcharges: The ZIP code lists used to determine where these charges apply will change.
- Zone assignments: Certain ZIP codes will be reassigned to different zones.
- A new surcharge: Ground and Ground Saver shipments from certain origin ZIP codes, for qualifying customers, will face an additional per-package fee beginning on or after December 21. Details are expected in early November.
The announcement is only the starting point
Intelligent Audit’s Joe Wilkinson sees this as a preliminary announcement: a few consequential changes are confirmed, while much of the information needed to evaluate them remains outstanding. As additional announcements roll in, we'll be able to better assess the true exposure.
So, prepare your data now. And, update the analysis as details arrive.
Shippers can start by identifying packages subject to Additional Handling, mapping shipment volumes by origin and destination ZIP code, and reviewing contractual provisions governing rate and surcharge changes.
As UPS releases the remaining details, those changes should be modeled against actual shipment data to identify where costs concentrate and which opportunities deserve attention.
